Ombudsman addresses legal barriers to reproductive assistance

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan met on March 6 with the parents of a soldier killed in the 44-day war. They raised concerns about facing difficulties in accessing assisted reproductive technologies, some of which stem from legally mandated age restrictions.

The discussion focused on legislative and practical obstacles to reproductive assistance. Manasyan assured that the issue remains a priority for her office.

She recalled that on June 10, 2024, she filed an appeal with the Constitutional Court challenging the constitutionality of Article 12, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1 and 2 of Armenia’s Law on Reproductive Health and Rights. The court accepted the case for review on June 18, 2024, under procedural decision No. SDAO-100.

The ombudsman concluded that the age restrictions on assisted reproductive technologies contradict constitutional principles prohibiting discrimination, protecting the right to privacy, and ensuring proportionality in rights limitations.
