Expert says national team in disarray, players divided

Football expert Arman Abelyan has commented on the Armenian national team’s recent crushing defeats to Georgia, stating the setbacks were entirely predictable. He made his remarks in a Facebook post.

Abelyan described the national team environment as chaotic, dishonest, and toxic, claiming the squad is internally divided.

“Clarifying the disgrace: In a previous post, I mentioned the absence of a true ‘team’ concept within the national team but didn’t elaborate, as there was still a game ahead.

Well, there’s total disorder in the team, a dishonest and unhealthy atmosphere. This failure isn’t surprising. The squad is split into several groups—locals, players from Russia, and so on...

Some players only received Armenian passports after lengthy persuasion and now play solely for personal benefit, with guaranteed spots in the starting lineup.

There are many examples of this unhealthy environment, shared independently by several reliable sources in personal conversations.

One player apologized for not speaking Armenian; two years later, he still doesn’t sing a single word of the anthem. Even among locals, there are players not fully committed. But the main issue remains the dishonest atmosphere.

And the coach, a day before the match, throws Ranos under the bus to appear strict. No professional coach would act like that the day before a game; disagreements should be handled later.

Previously, the coach did the same with Adamyan—publicly saying he no longer wanted to play for the team, a statement that only turns people more against him.

And let’s not pretend that similar issues weren’t brought up with Petrakov... There have always been privileged players using the national team as a career tool.

The team’s leaders are also absent in their roles. Otherwise, Ranos would have consulted at least one of them before confronting the coach. Ranos isn’t blameless, but this should’ve been resolved differently and at a better time.

Names don’t matter here—anything is possible in such an unhealthy atmosphere. This is an artificially constructed team, not a real TEAM. And in national football, that’s what matters most—more than tactics or technique,” the post reads.

Abelyan added that the sole party responsible is the Football Federation, which he claims has failed in most areas. He emphasized that the team is not truly national, but international in nature.

“And this is just a small part of the overall problem,” he concluded.

In the UEFA Nations League play-off, Armenia lost 0–3 to Georgia in Yerevan and 1–6 in Tbilisi. Edgar Sevikyan scored Armenia’s only goal in the second half of the second match. As a result, Armenia remained in Division C, while Georgia was promoted to Division B.
