German President: Armenia has constructive stance on peace deal

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia has shown significant constructiveness in recent weeks regarding a peace agreement with Azerbaijan, and no obstacles remain to signing the finalized treaty, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier stated during an official visit to Yerevan.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan, Steinmeier emphasized that Armenia has taken important steps to align with the peace treaty’s terms. He noted that, during their meeting, they acknowledged the global consequences of unresolved conflicts and the growing complexity of resolving them.

Steinmeier stressed that now is a decisive moment for both Armenia and Azerbaijan to take the final steps needed to establish lasting peace.

“We have all witnessed Armenia’s highly constructive approach over the past few weeks. There are no remaining open issues in the peace agreement, and nothing stands in the way of its signing, ratification, and implementation. Armenia has made decisions that have made the agreement possible, and now Azerbaijan must eliminate any remaining doubts,” Steinmeier said.

He added that the people of the South Caucasus are hoping for an end to the long-standing conflict, which would also spur economic progress in the region.

“It has not been easy for Armenia to work toward ending the conflict and reaching a resolution. Many countries could take inspiration from this process,” Steinmeier remarked.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has repeatedly stated that the draft peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan is finalized and awaits official signing. He has proposed initiating consultations with the Azerbaijani president to finalize the signing process.

On March 13, Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it had accepted Azerbaijan’s proposals on the two previously unresolved articles. It confirmed that the peace agreement is ready for signing and that Armenia is open to discussing the time and location. However, Baku has since introduced new preconditions and claimed it is premature to discuss signing dates.
