Germany recognizes Karabakh as ‘Azerbaijani territory’![]() April 2, 2025 - 15:50 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier stated during a press briefing in Baku, following a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, that Germany acknowledges Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan, according to Azerbaijani media reports. “We have expressed our position in line with the norms of international law. We know and recognize that Karabakh is Azerbaijani territory,” said Steinmeier, as quoted by APA. He stressed the importance of adopting a sensitive approach to such complex matters. Steinmeier added that an examination of Germany’s foreign policy in recent years shows that Berlin maintains a balanced stance toward the region. Before arriving in Baku, Steinmeier had visited Armenia on an official trip. During his stay, he posted an image on social media featuring the flag of Artsakh, which was later removed. The post caused uproar in Baku, prompting Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry to summon Germany’s ambassador. It was later revealed that Germany had issued an apology to Azerbaijani authorities for President Steinmeier’s post featuring the Artsakh flag. The statement accompanying the image was described as the result of a “technical error” and subsequently deleted from the account. Alongside the image of the Artsakh flag, Steinmeier had written: “The conflict concerns the Nagorno-Karabakh region. According to international law, the region belongs to Azerbaijan, but it was predominantly inhabited by Armenians. Armed conflicts have erupted multiple times over recent decades.” Photo.
