Iran sees ‘3+3’ platform as tool for Armenia-Azerbaijan peace

PanARMENIAN.Net - Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani stated that the “3+3” regional platform could be used to facilitate peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He made the remarks during a seminar titled “Promoting the Shanghai Spirit: The SCO in Action” at Yerevan State University, as reported by Sputnik Armenia.

“Iran maintains communication with both Armenia and Azerbaijan and supports stability and peace along the border. During our discussions, we call on the parties to move toward signing a peace agreement... Iran believes it is essential to avoid any action that may lead to tension,” Sobhani said, referring to recent gunfire from the Azerbaijani side near the border area.

The ambassador emphasized that the region cannot endure another round of tension or war.

He noted that Tehran expects all parties involved to adhere to principles aimed at preserving peace and stability. According to him, Iranian authorities are ready to support any proposed format that contributes to the establishment of peace.

Sobhani added that Turkey also plans to propose Georgia’s inclusion in the “3+3” platform.

“I believe the 3+3 format is a good regional mechanism and could be used to progress toward a peace agreement,” the ambassador concluded.

The idea of the 3+3 platform—which includes Russia, Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia—was launched in late 2020 by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. So far, three meetings have been held, all without Georgia’s participation.
