Azerbaijani activist appeals to Pashinyan from prison

Azerbaijani citizen and peace activist Bahruz Samadov has sent a letter from a Baku prison to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Factor.am reports, citing the text of the letter.

Samadov, arrested in August 2024 on charges of state treason, remains in custody. He is known for his advocacy for peace and has often voiced strong criticism of Azerbaijan’s militaristic policies on various Western platforms. He stands accused of espionage in favor of Armenia and, if convicted, could face life imprisonment at the age of 29.

In his letter, Samadov appeals to Pashinyan to officially deny any link between him and Armenian intelligence services.

"Mr. Prime Minister, I sincerely urge you to remain committed to the peace agenda, do everything possible to prevent ceasefire violations at the border, and take practical steps to make future coexistence a reality. For lasting peace, both sides must embrace values rooted in shared geography and the idea of a common future. These values must be based on the unconditional rejection of violence.

Additionally, I respectfully request an official and substantiated statement confirming that I have never had any collaboration with Armenian external intelligence services. I hope that new contacts between the sides will soon lead to my release and the end of my status as a 'prisoner of peace.'

Achieving peace requires both sides to renounce territorial claims and focus on models of coexistence and good-neighborly relations in the post-conflict period," the letter states.

Samadov ends his letter with a poem about peace by Charles Baudelaire.

The young scholar is a doctoral student at Charles University in Prague and is known for his strong anti-war and pro-peace stance. In his writings and public statements, he has criticized the Aliyev regime’s authoritarian domestic policies and military aggression in Nagorno-Karabakh. In court, Samadov pleaded not guilty, asserting, “I am a pacifist who practices Christianity, a religion that preaches peace.”
