Mamijanyan to ruling party: betrayal labels rightfully yours, not ours

Hayk Mamijanyan, head of the I Have Honor faction, responded on Facebook to recent remarks made by National Assembly MP Vahagn Aleksanyan. He accused Aleksanyan of once again distorting facts from the parliamentary podium, particularly in reference to a phone conversation between Armenia’s third president, Serzh Sargsyan, and then-U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.

Mamijanyan posted an official denial issued by the U.S. Embassy in Armenia in 2010, which stated: “President Sargsyan did not discuss the content of President Obama’s April 24 statement nor did he attempt to delay consideration of House Resolution 252. On the contrary, the conversations between Vice President Biden and President Sargsyan, recently referred to by Vice President Biden, were about the urgent need to normalize Armenian-Turkish relations. Both leaders agreed that these relations should be normalized without preconditions.”

Mamijanyan emphasized, “Do not try to attribute your 'rightfully earned' label of traitor and renegade to us—those 'titles' belong to you forever.”

He also cited the content of the phone calls: “The U.S. Vice President and President Sargsyan spoke twice in April 2009. During these conversations, the Vice President told President Sargsyan that the United States believed normalization of relations with Turkey and opening the borders would pave the way for a better future for Armenia, and expressed U.S. support for his leadership. The Vice President conveyed the Obama Administration’s support for progress on the normalization process reflected in the Armenian-Turkish joint statement proposed by Switzerland.”

Mamijanyan concluded: “Do not try to pin on us the betrayal and disloyalty that you have so 'rightfully' earned—those 'titles' are eternally yours. You clearly can’t rest easy without Melik Frangyul’s 'glory',” he wrote.
