Iran declares April 28 day of mourning after port blast

Iran has declared April 28 a national day of mourning following a powerful explosion at the Bandar Abbas port, according to Iran’s IRNA news agency. The death toll has risen to 40.

More than 1,000 people have been injured.

The explosion caused extensive destruction in the port. A fire, affecting a large part of the infrastructure and fueled by chemical storage facilities, has been burning for over a day. Despite ongoing rescue efforts, the blaze has not yet been fully contained.

Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has extended its condolences to the families of the victims in Iran. The ministry published a message on X.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic explosion in Bandar Abbas that resulted in numerous casualties. We express our heartfelt condolences to the government and the friendly people of Iran, as well as to the families and relatives of the victims. We wish a speedy recovery to all the injured,” the message reads.

The explosion occurred on April 26, and the cause remains unknown. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has called for a thorough investigation.
