Malyan: Civil Contract MPs showed interest in impeachment

Before delivering individual letters to members of parliament on behalf of We Are Awake movement, activist Narek Malyan stated that initiating impeachment remains the only viable way to change power in Armenia.

"At this point, I know of two individuals opposed to the impeachment process—one is Nikol Pashinyan, for obvious reasons, and the other is Robert Kocharyan. I don't know a third person," he said, according to Panorama.am .

Malyan emphasized that currently, there are no other alternatives for changing the leadership. He noted that even during the movement initiated by Bishop Bagrat, some MPs from the Civil Contract faction had shown interest in the impeachment process.

In response to a reporter's clarifying question about whether there had been hints of support for impeachment votes, Malyan replied affirmatively.

"Yes. For example, during the Homeland Salvation Movement, a Civil Contract MP tried to negotiate with the opposition through me, suggesting that the remaining months of a deputy’s salary be calculated, a sponsor found to cover it, and in return, the MP would be ready to speak at an opposition rally," he said.

Malyan said that members of the Civil Contract faction are united by two main factors: "fear" and "personal interest."

"There is no ideology there. When there is a nationwide movement supporting impeachment—which is crucial for its success—they will shed their fears and join," he stated, adding that each MP must personally explain whether they become accomplices to Nikol Pashinyan or not.

Malyan also announced that starting today, they would initiate meetings with Armenia's three former presidents—Levon Ter-Petrosyan, Robert Kocharyan, and Serzh Sargsyan—as well as seek a meeting with the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) party.

"These will be consultative meetings," he said.

He further mentioned that the opposition has been given full freedom to select a candidate for prime minister and that the movement is ready to unconditionally support any candidate nominated by the opposition.

"If they refuse to act, then, I believe, the public must take matters into its own hands. We will generate a candidate for prime minister and only ask them for their signatures," he said.

Malyan conveyed the following message to the opposition: "The right thing is to create an atmosphere of partnership and cooperation around the process and work together to press for Pashinyan's removal."

According to him, this process will reveal who truly seeks Pashinyan’s ouster and who does not.
