THE RESIGNATION OF THE ARMENIAN NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SPEAKER IS THE BEST DECISION IN THE PRESENT SITUATION, THINKS VICE SPEAKER OF THE PARLIAMENT FROM THE REPUBLICAN PARTY

PanARMENIAN.Net - 27.09.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. "The resignation of the speaker of the National Assembly Armen Khachatrian is the best decision in the present political situation. I highly assess the courage displayed by Armen Khachatrian", said yesterday to the journalists the vice-speaker of the Armenian parliament, in fact the leader of the Republican party of Armenia, Tigran Torosian, commenting upon the decision of speaker Armen Khachatrian to resign.

Torosian assessed as "immoral" the discussions, which started after the speaker announced about his resignation. Vice-speaker sharply condemned the statements of some deputies, who characterized the events in the Armenian parliament as "an attempt of a coup d'etate". "No need to make a fuss about it and speak with such statements. The deputies themselves will settle the question of the speaker's resignation", said Torosian.

In reply to the question whether he is going to take the post of the speaker of the parliament, Torosian said he has never had such aspirations. "Problems must be settled principally, and the position of this or other person is of secondary importance", stressed the Armenian parliamentarian.

Torosian is sure that Armen Khachatrian had informed Robert Kocharian about his intention to resign. "It's natural that in case the speaker of the parliament or any other official decides to resign, he must inform the head of the state", said Tigran Torosian. -0-
