Olympic torch tested in Munich’s BMW centerApril 12, 2012 - 11:00 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - The Olympic torch has passed rigorous testing to ensure even the worst of Britain’s weather will not be able to put it out, thisislondon.co.uk reported. Two prototypes withstood 50mph winds, extreme temperatures, driving rain and even hail in trials at BMW’s research and innovation centre in Munich. Harsh weather was simulated in a tunnel with a computer-controlled circulation system that allows experts to analyze the effects. Britain’s double Olympic gold medallist Daley Thompson joined the Standard to experience the wind tunnel testing by BMW, a London 2012 partner. Its technology communications head Ralph Huber said: “The torch was tested for everything expected in a British summer - wind, sun, rain and snow to see if anything would blow the flame out but nothing did. We incorporated all the demands from the UK and it met every one.” The torch was also taken to Mount Snowdon to be tested at altitude. Designed by London-based Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, the torch has 8,000 holes to represent each of its bearers. It will start its journey around Britain from Land’s End to the Olympic Stadium on May 19.
