Armenian FM: cooperation with IAEA important to Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian met with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano.

Welcoming the guest, Minister Nalbandian noted that Armenia attaches great importance to cooperation with IAEA as a significant component of the country’s energy and nuclear security.

Mr. Amano, in turn, hailed high-level bilateral cooperation.

The two men discussed operation of Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, construction of a new power unit, as well as issues related to nuclear security.

In this context, Armenia’s Foreign Minster noted that as a country owning nuclear technology, Armenia has joined a number of international agreements initiated by the EU aimed at assessment of risks at power plants.

Nalbandian and Yukiya Amano further exchanged views on IAEA steps aimed at ensuring nuclear security on global level.

A meeting with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Armen Movsisyan is planned within the framework of a two-day visit.
