ARF Dashnaktsutyun candidate Hovsep Simonyan came second with 10281 votes, followed by non-partisan contenders Andranik Avetisyan and Spartak Petrosyan, who gained 2458 and 2130 votes respectively. The ruling Republican Party of Armenia, whose member Vardan Ghukasyan had occupied the post since 1999, did not designate a nominee and supported Balasanyan.
