Fried: South Caucasian and Central Asian States Eurasian Border of Freedom

PanARMENIAN.Net - "The South Caucasian and Central Asian states are the Eurasian border of liberty," Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried stated. In his words, the Unites States and Europe should join in promoting the unification of new democracies and support the forces engaged in carrying out reforms in the regions. Mr. Fried noted that he does not rate such policy as anti-Russian or provocative. "I am convinced that Russia is interested in having democratic but not authoritative states as neighbors," he said. In his words, in the course of his recent visit to the South Caucasus he revealed some contradictions in the assessments of Washington and other states targeted at the contribution to democratization of American policy. "In the U.S. journalists or representatives of research centers often claim that the U.S. administration provide other countries with a pass to democracy, since it is interested in deployment of military bases, oil or other issues. Despite all this, there is an opinion in the region that the U.S. administration is aggressive in supporting democracy and color revolutions. As a matter of fact such accusations are false," Daniel Fried said. "We have a commitment to protect our ideals of freedom and democracy. We do not believe in export of democracy. The Bush Administration has been accused of many faults however I hope no one will accuse us of neo-trotskism. Citing President Bush I will say that we wish to support democratic movements and institutes in each country and culture having a purpose to put an end to despotism throughout the globe. Yes, there is something insubstantial in it but if 20 years ago one spoke of the collapse of the Berlin Wall or establishment of democracy in Poland such statements would have taken as not serious," Daniel Fried resumed, Mediamax reports.
