US PRESIDENT CALLED TO WAIVE JACKSON-VANIK AMENDMENT FOR ANOTHER YEARJanuary 31, 2003 - 21:20 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - US president George Bush has addressed Congress calling to waive the Jackson-Vanik amendment to the law on trade with 8 former USSR republics for another year. Let us note that the amendment provides for limiting trade with the states that are already CIS members, including Armenia. Sanctions cosponsored by Congressmen Jackson and Vanik had been introduced against the USSR due to its impeding the migration Jews in 1974 and spread on the CIS countries after the collapse of the Soviet Union. As reported by "ITAR-TASS" agency, US Congress cannot repeal the amendment yet, although the vast majority of Congressmen perceive its being not urgent and consider it a remnant of the Cold War. For the time being, to maintain normal trade relations with the 8 CIS countries, the US president has to inform Congress that departure of Jews is not hindered in these countries.![]() ![]() Grigoryan added that the situation around the world and particularly in the region is very difficult. The Armenian Defense Ministry has denied Azerbaijan's accusations of violating the ceasefire.
