Mher Shahgeldyan: Civic Control over Security System EssentialFebruary 13, 2006 - 15:44 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian delegation led by head of the RA NA standing committee on defense, home affairs and security Mher Shahgeldyan took part in the conference of Baltic and South Caucasian states on cooperation and reform held in Tbilisi February 6-9. The participants focused on the problem of parliamentary control over the security systems. During today's briefing, the Armenian delegation head stated that this is an important direction which meets the tendencies of development of parliamentarism in Armenia after the adoption of the constitutional amendments. Shahgeldyan noted that the institute of civic control supposes several directions including the post of the Civic Minister of Defense and civic specialists as well as parliamentary control over the security system. When touching upon the regional cooperation Mher Shahgeldyan noted that Yerevan is positive about the possibility of transformation of the South Caucasian Parliamentary Initiative into the Parliamentary Assembly of the South Caucasus.![]() ![]() Grigoryan added that the situation around the world and particularly in the region is very difficult. The Armenian Defense Ministry has denied Azerbaijan's accusations of violating the ceasefire. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan took to social media to thank his Lithuanian counterpart for the contribution.
