Karabakh Independence Not End in Itself but Possibility to Live Freely in Homeland

PanARMENIAN.Net - "The core of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict lies in disrespect for the rights of our people," NKR Foreign Minister Georgy Petrosian stated when delivering a speech during the "Karabakh Problem: Settlement Prospects" hearings held in the NKR National Assembly. Georgy Petrosian emphasized that "in response to political demands from the Azerbaijani authorities Nagorno Karabakh received ethnic cleansings." In his words, official Baku always tried to transform the problem of self-determination into a military conflict.

The NKR FM remarked that the current proposals provide for liquidation of the consequences of the conflict but not its settlement on the basis of respect for the rights of Nagorno Karabakh people. He voiced opinion that today the mediators insist on the problem resolution within the framework of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity thus damaging the interests of Karabakh people, what is "immoral". Georgy Petrosian voiced regret that the international mediators neglect the outcomes of the referendum held in Nagorno Karabakh in December 1991. In his words, this neglecting incited Azerbaijan to greater aggression.

He suggested the parties signed an agreement on abandoning any militaristic intentions. This, in his opinion, will show who really wishes to settle the conflict peacefully. "Independence is not an end in itself for us, but the possibility to live and develop freely in the homeland," the NKR FM stated, reported Mediamax.
