Famed Armenian sculptor Ara Shiraz dies at 73March 18, 2014 - 14:33 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Famed Armenian sculptor Ara Shiraz died at age 73 on the night of March 18 from the second cerebral stroke. Shiraz had been hospitalized in late February after a stroke. Born in Yerevan in 1941, Shiraz is the son of prominent Armenian poet Hovhannes Shiraz and poetess Silva Kaputikian. Having graduated from the Yerevan Institute of Theater and Fine Arts, Shiraz displayed his works at numerous exhibitions around the world including Moscow, Leningrad, Tbilisi, Paris. He authored monuments to Armenian poets Paruyr Sevak (Yerevan, 1974), Yeghishe Charents (Charencavan , 1977), political leader Alexander Miasnikyan (Yerevan, 1980) and U.S.-Armenian writer William Saroyan (Yerevan Pantheon , 1991). In 1987, the sculptor he was elected president of the Union of Artists of Armenia. Shiraz’s works are on display in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Armenia, National Gallery, Moscow Tretyakov Gallery, in many private collections in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tbilisi, Yerevan, Beirut, Paris, London, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit and Montreal.
