19-year-old Armenian soldier dies in Azeri attack at contact line

PanARMENIAN.Net - On June 24, around 10:50 pm, soldier Armen Avetisyan, 19, died in a frontline position of a military unit in the eastern direction of the Karabakh-Azerbaijani Line of Contact. He was fatally injured in Azeri attack. An investigation is underway.

On June 25, the Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) Republic President Bako Sahakyan signed a decree to posthumously award a medal “For Service in Battle” to Armen Avetisyan, for bravery shown during the defense of the NKR state borders, the press service of the Artsakh Republic President reported.

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
