Armenia, Azerbaijan hope for Russia’s support to Karabakh process

PanARMENIAN.Net - The President of Armenia and Azerbaijan stand for the soonest resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict and hope for Russia’s assistance in the process, RIA Novosti reported, following a trilateral meeting between Serzh Sargsyan, Ilham Aliyev and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Sochi on Sunday, Aug 10.

“This protracted conflict should be resolved and I hope that your personal engagement will give renewed impetus to the process,” Aliyev said during the talks, reminding of the United Nations resolutions which required “immediate withdrawal of Armenian troops from the Azerbaijani territory.”

“I think that as our close friend and partner, Russia has a special role in the settlement process and in the near future we will be able to find a solution corresponding to the norms and principles of the international law,” he said.

“We believe that the conflict should be resolved in line with the basic principles proposed by the OSCE Minsk Group,” President Sargsyan replied.

“Azerbaijan always cites the UN resolutions but I would like to ask Mr Aliyev whether any provision of these documents was ever observed by his country,” he said. “Armenia was the only side to use its influence to stop hostilities. I think it’s time to put an end to accusations, otherwise, this conflict will remain unsettled for a long time.”

Putin, in turn, stressed the necessity to of peaceful talks as there is “no tragedy worse than loss of human lives.”
