With a boost from the latest public holiday, the film on Saturday overtook “Avatar,” the previous record holder with a 13.6 million ticket sales score. In the small hours of Sunday (Aug. 17) morning, distributor CJ Entertainment announced that the film had sold 14.227 million tickets. That makes it the first film ever to sell more than 14 million tickets in Korean cinemas and also the first to exceed the $100 million mark. As of this morning the film’s gross was KRW109.8 billion ($107.6 million). The scores have been achieved in just 19 days, meaning that “Roaring Currents” has headed the box office for three consecutive weekends. The film depicts a 16th century naval commander who defeats the invading Japanese fleet despite having just 10 ships.
