“Gett, the Trial of Viviane Amsalem” picked as Israel’s foreign Oscar entry

PanARMENIAN.Net - Courtroom drama “Gett, the Trial of Viviane Amsalem” directed by siblings Shlomi and Ronit Elkabetz, has been selected as Israel’s nomination for this year’s best foreign language Oscar race, Variety reported.

The final entry in a trilogy that includes “To Take a Wife” and “7 Days,” “Gett” stars Ronit Elkabetz as Viviane, a woman who has been attempting to divorce her husband Elisha (Simon Abkarian) for three years. The entire the film takes place inside of an Israeli courtroom where, due to law, rabbis may only approve of marriage dissolution with the husband’s approval.

The decision was made following “Gett’s” best picture win at the Israeli Academy of Film and Television’s Ophir Awards on Sunday, Sept 21. Sasson Gabai also won the best supporting actor award for his role in the film.

“Gett” has also received significant international attention since its Cannes premiere in May. It has screened at both the Toronto Film Festival and Jerusalem Film Festival, having won the audience favorite award at the latter. Music Box Films will distribute the film in the U.S.
