Oprah Winfrey, "Selma" director reuniting for "Queen Sugar" series![]() February 3, 2015 - 11:40 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Oprah Winfrey is reuniting with "Selma" director Ava DuVernay for a new drama series for OWN. The former primetime talk show host is set to star in an untitled show based on Natalie Baszile's celebrated first-time novel "Queen Sugar," AceShowbiz reports. The story will center on a Los Angeles woman who inherits an 800-acre sugar cane farm in the heart of Louisiana from her late father. She navigates a new and very different environment as she is met with curiosity, resistance, and romance. "I loved this book and immediately saw it as a series for OWN," Oprah said. "The story's themes of reinventing your life, parenting alone, family connections and conflicts, and building new relationships are what I believe will connect our viewers to this show." "From the moment I was introduced to the book, I was captivated by the idea of a modern woman wrestling with identity, family, culture and the echoes of history," said DuVernay. "To bring this kind of storytelling to life alongside Oprah for her network is wildly wonderful. I'm excited about what's in store." DuVernay will direct, write, and produce the series, while Winfrey is expected to take on a recurring role and serve as a producer as well.
