Turkish helmer of Genocide drama apologizes to Armenian people

PanARMENIAN.Net - Moscow will host a presentation of Fatih Akin's Genocide drama "The Cut" on Feb 3.

On Feb 2, the award-winning German director of Turkish descent met with the head of the New Nakhichevan and Russia Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church Archbishop Ezras Nersisyan, with producers Ruben Didishian, Aram Movsisyan, Tigran Manasyan and actress Arevik Martirosyan also attending.

As the Diocese press service told PanARMENIAN.Net the meeting focused on the Armenian Genocide, among other issues. In this context, the Archbishop hailed the brave and fair stance of the Turkish helmer who took a great risk in addressing an issue, any reference to which entails criminal prosecution by Ankara. The Archbishop further criticized the policy of denial which prevents reconciliation between the two peoples, which might be possible were Ankara to face the dark pages of its past.

Akin, in turn, noted that intention to confront the truth and share in the pain of the Genocide survivors were among the reasons that prompted him to create the film.

"Though I can't speak for the entire Turkish nation, on my own behalf I apologize for the immense pain caused by my ancestors," the helmer said in conclusion.
