Groundhog Day musical to open on Broadway in 2017April 3, 2015 - 18:28 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - A musical version of Groundhog Day will open on Broadway in 2017. As AceShowbiz reports citing The Hollywood Reporter, producers have confirmed that the production will open on March 9, 2017, with previews beginning six weeks earlier on January 23. A theatre for the production has yet to be announced. Matilda composer Tim Minchin is working on the adaptation, along with the film's original scriptwriter Danny Rudin and Matilda director Matthew Warchus. Groundhog Day starred Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, and centred on a grumpy weatherman named Phil Connors who found himself stuck in a seemingly never-ending time-loop. He is forced to relive the same day over and over again, while having to report on the same meteorological news event each time. Announcing the project last year, Minchin said that the musical will be "both instantly recognisable, and utterly different" from the 1993 film. He added: "The central conceit is perfectly suited to the theatre, in my opinion. "In fact, I think many of its ideas could be enhanced by the stage. It has the potential to be complex, dark, visually fascinating, and thematically rich, whilst still being a joyous romantic comedy with cool tunes and lots of gags."
