The comedy became the all-time highest debut for September, one of the lowest-grossing months of any year. The previous record holder was the first film, "Hotel Transylvania", which launched to $42,5 million in North America in the same month in 2012, AceShowbiz reports. "We had a great date, and this is a big win for Sony Pictures Animation," said Sony president of marketing Josh Greenstein. "And the movie is exploding." Another newcomer at domestic box office was Nancy Meyers' comedy "The Intern". Starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, the movie opened to an estimated $18.2 million against a $40 million budget. He also added that the movie played well in any location of the country. In the third place was Fox's "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials", which earned around $14 million from 3,792 locations for a domestic total of $51.7 million. The movie came in behind expectations, having grossed $23.1 million domestically after 10 days in theaters.
