Britpop icons Oasis doc in the works from Amy Winehouse doc helmers

PanARMENIAN.Net - The dramatic, tempestuous career of Britpop icons Oasis will be retold through a documentary created by the filmmakers behind the Amy Winehouse doc, Amy, Rolling Stone reports.

Amy director Asif Kapadia will act as executive producer with filmmaker Mat Whitecross directing. Amy producer James Gay Rees will also be producing the film, which has neither a title or release date yet.

Distributor Independent will make an official announcement with more details on the project within the next week, but Independent's managing director Andrew Orr spoke with Screen Daily about the project. "Oasis are without a doubt one of the classic British rock bands, selling 70 million albums worldwide and defining the sound of a whole era," he said. "At its heart are Liam and Noel Gallagher, two of the finest rock and roll stars this country has ever produced. Mat's sensibility and style are going to provide the perfect complement to this tale of the rise of one of the great rock and roll bands."

Neither Noel or Liam Gallagher have commented on the project, though NME reports that Independent and the documentary's filmmakers have been given "unprecedented access to the band and unseen archive footage."

Noel quit the band in 2009 after 18 years together. "It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight," he wrote on the band's website soon after a cancelled gig in Paris. "People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer."

Following the split, Liam went on to form the now-defunct Beady Eye with former Oasis members. Noel's solo project Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds released their sophomore album, Chasing Yesterday, in February.
