Dev Patel, Jeremy Irons' “The Man Who Knew Infinity” to open IFFI Fest

PanARMENIAN.Net - The 46th edition of the International Film Festival of India, Goa will kick off Friday, Nov. 20 with Matthew Brown’s biopic of Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan “The Man Who Knew Infinity”, starring Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons, Variety reports.

The festival (Nov. 20-30) will close with Pablo Trapero’s “The Clan,” Argentina’s submission in the Oscar foreign-language category. Tom Hooper’s “The Danish Girl,” starring Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander, will be the mid-festival gala.

Easily the richest film festival in India, the festival hands out cash awards totaling $200,000 across various competitive segments. The international competition section will have 15 features competing, including Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s “Journey to the Shore,” Peter Greenaway’s “Eisenstein in Guanajuato,” Stephane Brize’s “The Measure of a Man,” Grimur Hakonarson’s “Rams” and a brace of Indian features – Debesh Chatterjee’s “Natoker Moto” and Kaushik Ganguly’s “Cinemawala.”

The international jury will be chaired by filmmaker Shekhar Kapur (“Elizabeth”) and include German actress Julia Jentsch, Korean director Jeon Kyu-hwan (“Angry Painter”), Palestinian multihyphenate Suha Arraf (“Villa Touma”) and veteran British filmmaker Michael Radford (“Il Postino”).

Vinod Mankara’s Sanskrit language “Priyamanasam” will open the Indian Panorama strand of the festival. Global festival favorites like Chaitanya Tamhane’s “Court,” Hari Viswanath’s “Radio Set,” Bardroy Barretto’s “Let’s Dance to the Rhythm” and Neeraj Ghaywan’s “Masaan” will also feature in this strand.

This year’s country in focus is Spain with spotlights on Carlos Saura, Pedro Almodovar and Alejandro Amenabar. Another strand will showcase contemporary Argentinian cinema.

In collaboration with the Intl. Council for Film, Television and Audiovisual Communication (ICFT), Paris and Unesco, the festival will present the ICFT-Unesco Fellini Prize to a film that reflects the ideals of peace, tolerance, nonviolence and friendship.
