In the trailer, McConaughey plays a poor Mississippi farmer and Confederate soldier who becomes disillusioned and leads his own rebellion against the secessionist government with the backing of former slaves. “You, me, we’re all out there dying so they can stay rich,” McConaughey tells a crowd, indicating the wealthy, slave-owning upper class of the Southern states. Gary Ross wrote and directed the movie, which is based on the true story of Newton Knight of rural Jones County, Mississippi. Ross produced along with Jon Kilik and Scott Stuber. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali, Keri Russell star alongside McConaughey. STX Entertainment plans to release “Free State of Jones” on May 13.
