  Russia: 1994 Karabakh ceasefire agreement is of unlimited duration April 22, 2016 - 11:45 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - The 1994 and 1995 ceasefire agreement in Nagorno Karabakh continues serving as a basis for a possible armistice in the conflict zone, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Thursday, April 21. “In view of the current situation in Nagorno Karabakh, the Russian side insists that the 1994 agreement on the ceasefire and the 1995 agreement on strengthening the ceasefire in Nagorno Karabakh are of unlimited duration," the ministry said, in particular. According to the statement, this fundamental position was stressed in a note by Russia’s Permanent Mission to the OSCE, sent to Azerbaijan’s Permanent Mission on April 12.    The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
