The two titles, along with runners-up “Children of the Mountain” and “Midsummer in Newtown,” will receive encore screenings April 24, the final day of the 15th annual festival. The filmmakers of “Here Alone” and “The Return” will also take home cash prizes of $10,000 each. Written by David Ebeltoft and directed by Rod Blackhurst, “Here Alone” takes place a virus-decimated world where the uninfected must fend off other survivors in the grip of madness and bloodlust. Kelly Duane de la Vega and Katie Galloway’s “The Return,” meanwhile, investigates the issues facing convicts re-entering society in the wake of the repeal of California’s three-strikes law. Priscilla Anany’s runner up “Children of the Mountain” centers on a Ghanaian woman’s quest to heal her child, while Lloyd Kramer’s documentary “Midsummer in Newtorn” chronicles a student production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” following the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Winners of the festival’s juried competitions were announced earlier this week, with Demetri Martin’s comedy “Dean” and documentary “Do Not Resist” taking the top prizes.
