Armenia’s Sargsyan, U.S.’ Biden talk Karabakh by phoneMay 21, 2016 - 10:18 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - President Serzh Sargsyan on Friday, May 20 had phone talks with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden on the latter’s initiative. Focusing on the current stage of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement, the parties stressed the importance of adhering to the implementation of agreements, reached at a Vienna-hosted meeting. Sargsyan and his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev on May 16 met in Vienna, with the foreign policy chiefs of the United States, France and Russia having mediated the summit. Also, the parties agreed that the conflict should be resolved only through peaceful means in the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmanship. The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
