Bundestag’s Genocide recognition “to add to condemnation of such crimes”

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian deputy parliament speaker hailed the German Bundestag’s adoption of a resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, the press service of the National Assembly said Thursday, June 2.

The German Bundestag on Thursday adopted a resolution on the recognition and the condemnation of the Armenian Genocide.

In a phone conversation with his German counterpart Edelgard Bulmahn, Eduard Sharmazanov said the resolution will pave the way for a new course in the process of the recognition and condemnation of genocides.

“I am confident that by acknowledging this grave crime committed a hundred years ago, we can prevent the recurrence of new crimes against humanity,” Sharmazanov said.

Vice-President of Bundestag said, in turn, that the resolution called things by their proper names.

The vote was unanimous in supporting the resolution with just one MP voting against and another one abstaining.

Titled “Remembrance and commemoration of the Genocide of Armenians and other Christian minorities in the years 1915 and 1916,” the resolution passed with support from all the parties in Parliament. It was put forward by Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative bloc, their partners in the government, the Social Democrats, and the opposition Greens.
