“La La Land” and Natalie Portman top Critics' Choice Awards

PanARMENIAN.Net - "La La Land" shone the brightest at the recently concluded 22nd Annual Critics' Choice Awards. The drama musical, which has been hailed as potential Oscar contender, topped the winner list in movie categories with eight nods, including the coveted Best Picture gong, AceShowbiz said.

Prior to snatching the Best Picture award which was announced at the top of the ceremony, the movie had won Best Director for Damien Chazelle, Best Cinematography for Linus Sandgren, Best Editing for Tom Cross, Best Production Design for David Wasco and Sandy Reynolds-Wasco, and Best Score for Justin Hurwitz.

"City of Stars" which is sung by Ryan Gosling was named Best Song, while the movie's script, penned by Chazelle, was tied for Best Original Screenplay with "Manchester by the Sea" script by Kenneth Lonergan.

Gosling, however, lost the Best Actor nod to Casey Affleck for his performance in "Manchester by the Sea". Emma Stone was also in the running for Best Actress, but Natalie Portman ended up taking the honor for her role as the titular First Lady in biopic "Jackie".

"Jackie" nabbed two other awards for Best Costume Design (Madeline Fontaine) and Best Hair and Makeup. "Manchester by the Sea", meanwhile, helped Lucas Hedges earn his Best Young Actor/Actress award.

Other movies with multiple wins included "Hacksaw Ridge", which landed the Best Action Movie title and Best Actor in an Action Movie honor for Andrew Garfield, and "Deadpool", which was named Best Comedy and helped Ryan Reynolds win Best Actor in a Comedy title.

In TV field, "The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" dominated the list with four nods, including Best Movie Made for Television or Limited Series. The show's stars Courtney B. Vance, Sterling K. Brown and Sarah Paulson nabbed the Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Actress title respectively in a Movie Made for Television or Limited Series categories.

HBO's "Game of Thrones" was dubbed Best Drama Series. Evan Rachel Wood ("Westworld") and Bob Odenkirk ("Better Call Saul") nabbed the acting nods in Drama Series categories. HBO's "Silicon Valley" was hailed as Best Comedy Series, while Donald Glover ("Atlanta") and Kate McKinnon ("Saturday Night Live") were named Best Actor and Actress in Comedy Series.
