Night Shyamalan's latest horror-thriller starring James McAvoy, tops domestic box office by gaining approximately $40.2 million over the weekend, AceShowbiz said. Featuring McAvoy as a kidnapper with 24 personalities, the movie earns strong reviews and B+ CinemaScore. Shyamalan made "Split" with less than $10 million budget and self-financed it. Universal domestic distribution president Nick Carpou says that "Split" "absolutely delivers in terms of [Shyamalan] genre." "XXX: Return of Xander Cage" starring Vin Diesel sits on the second place, collecting approximately $20 million in North America and $50.5 million overseas. "Hidden Figures", "Sing" and "La La Land" are still in the top five, gaining about $16.2 million, $9 million and $8.4 million respectively. The force is still strong with "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story". The "Star Wars" spin-off sits on the sixth place of U.S. box office, earning approximately $7 million over January 20-22 frame. It finally surpassed $1 billion worldwide over the weekend, gaining an estimated $512.2 million in North America and $499.1 million overseas. "Rogue One", therefore, is among four movies released in 2016 which earned $1 billion or more, joining "Captain America: Civil War" ($1.153 billion), Pixar/Disney's "Finding Dory" ($1.028 billion) and Disney Animation Studio's "Zootopia" ($1.024 billion). Family film "Monster Trucks" sits on the seventh place on the domestic box office by earning an estimated $7 million. It is followed by "Patriots Day" on the eighth place with an estimated $6 million. Meanwhile, "The Founder", which follows the story of McDonald's impresario Ray Kroc, didn't earn much. The movie starring Michael Keaton only gained approximately $3.8 million from 1,100 theaters.
