Russia to restart production of Soviet Zenit camera in 2018August 19, 2017 - 15:07 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - The iconic Soviet-era Zenit camera will be back in production next year in the town of Krasnogorsk near Moscow, where it was first manufactured, The Calvert Journal reports. According to a report by Russian Radio 1, the Krasnogorsk factory will collaborate with foreign partners to produce the revamped, now digital camera. “We want to preserve the traditional colour and particular character of the Zenit camera in its revived version, so that its brand is recognisable. It will be modernised, but the characteristic contours, ergonomics, and camera lines will be integrated into [the design],” said Igor Sergeyev of Shvabe, a holding company within the Russian state-owned Rostec group, which is involved in the project. Zenit cameras were first manufactured in 1952 and were withdrawn from production in 2005. In 2014, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev put his support behind the initiative to resume production.
