Armenian Catholicos, Azerbaijani religious leader to meet in SeptemberAugust 28, 2017 - 12:49 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II will meet Azerbaijan’s religious leader Allahshukur Pashazadeh in September, a Mother See representative confirmed to PanARMENIAN.Net “According to preliminary data, the meeting will be held on September 8 in Moscow,” Rev. Fr. Vahram Melikyan said. The upcoming summit is mediated by Kirill, the Patriarch of Moscow and all Rus', with the two set discuss the conflict in Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) and the regional peace. Both Karekin II and Allahshukur Pashazadeh were invited to participate in Kirill's birthday in November 2016, with the media speculating that the two met on the sidelines of the celebration. The Mother See, however, refuted the reports as disinformation. The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
