Ombudsman: Azerbaijan has changed course of river flowing into ArmeniaJuly 14, 2021 - 14:19 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - For more than five years now, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces have changed the riverbed of Zvaraget, a tributary of Meghri River in Armenia's Syunik province, so that the tributary no longer feeds into the mainstream, Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan said. The change has been causing irrigation and drinking water shortages in the Armenian communities of Nrnadzor, Shvanidzor and Alvank since at least August 2020, Tatoyan said, according to Factor.am. He noted that the right to water is one of the fundamental human rights recognized by the United Nations, especially for this century. "We have ample opportunities to take these issues to the UN and the Council of Europe," the Ombudsman noted. Tatoyan has also been calling for the establishment of a security zone in the provinces of Syunik and Gegharkunik in order to ensure the security of the residents of border communities.
