Olympics: Simon Martirosyan snatches silver for Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net - Simon Martirosyan, one of the strongest and most celebrated Armenian weightlifters, won silver in Tokyo on Tuesday, August 3, raising the medal count on the country's balance to three at the Olympic Games.

Martirosyan raised a total of 423kg above his head, and was only outperformed by Akbar Djuraev of Uzbekistan.

In the snatch event, Martirosyan lifted 195 kg, setting a new Olympic record. In clean and jerk, however, the Armenian athlete raised 228 kg, failing his second and third attempts.

Also Tuesday, Greco-Roman wrestler Artur Aleksanyan won a silver medal, while Gymnast Artur Davtyan won bronze – Armenia's first medal – a day earlier.

Boxer Hovhannes Bachkov, meanwhile, has reached the semifinals in the Olympic boxing lightweight division and is now guaranteed no worse than a bronze medal. Bachkov will fight in the semifinals against Keyshawn Davis of the United States on August 6.
