"No clarity" on maps to be used in Armenia-Azerbaijan delimitation

PanARMENIAN.Net - Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan has failed to reveal what maps will be used in the process of demarcation and delimitation of the border with Azerbaijan.

Grigoryan told reporters after a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, October 28 that a map from the 1920s "is the one that has a legal basis", maintaining, however, that there is no consensus over whether to use the map from 1926 or the one from 1929.

"The first processes of demarcation began in 1926-1927 and concluded in 1929, serving as a basis for maps drawn after that," Grigoryan noted, according to the Armenian service of RFE/RL.

The Security Council chief said there is no obstacle for the Armenian side to start the process of demarcation and delimitation of the border, reminding that the country has expressed willingness to start the process and is waiting for a "positive signal" from Azerbaijan.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that Armenia and Azerbaijan can resolve border issues using maps from the Soviet period, but the process requires "mutual compromises".
