Vahagn Khachaturyan elected Armenia's new President![]() March 3, 2022 - 13:31 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Vahagn Khachaturyan was elected Armenia's new President on Thursday, March 3 when 71 members of the National Assembly voted in his favor. The parliament on Wednesday failed to elect Khachaturyan, who up until now served as the country's Minister of High Tech Industries, in the post. The opposition refused to take part in the vote, while the ruling Civil Contract party does not have sufficient representation, since it is necessary to gather at least 80 votes, and Civil Contract has only 71 lawmaker. In the second round, 64 votes would have been enough to elect him as president. On Thursday, the opposition did not participate in the vote. Khachaturyan was a member of the Armenian National Congress until his resignation in 2017. He led the ANC list in the 2013 Yerevan City Council election, but currently is not a member of any party. ![]() ![]() Grigoryan added that the situation around the world and particularly in the region is very difficult. The Armenian Defense Ministry has denied Azerbaijan's accusations of violating the ceasefire.
