Karabakh parliament says EU statement

PanARMENIAN.Net - The statement of President of the European Council Charles Michel following a trilateral meeting with Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders is a "reason for bewilderment", the National Assembly of Karabakh said in a statement on Tuesday, May 24.

Michel, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev held their third meeting since December in Brussels on May 22 and focused on the situation in the South Caucasus and the development of EU relations with both countries as well as the broader region. According to a statement from the EU, Michel told the two leaders that it was necessary that the rights and security of the ethnic Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) be addressed.

The Karabakh lawmakers said the statement distorts the essence of the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem and the legacy accumulated over 30 years of the negotiation process.

"For the first time in the negotiation discourse, an attempt is being made to abandon the political and geographical concept of "Nagorno-Karabakh" and the phrase "ethnic Armenian population of Karabakh" is introduced," the Karabakh parliament said.

"All this is completely in tune with the theses spread by the authorities of Azerbaijan before the Brussels meeting, and testifies to the retreat of the current authorities of Armenia from the foreign policy vector."

The lawmakers believe that the active role of the Council of Europe in the opening of the "epoch of peace" between Armenia and Azerbaijan at an accelerated pace could be understood if Europe had raised the aggression provoked by Azerbaijan against the people of Artsakh (Karabakh) in September 2020 with the same consistency.

Under the current circumstances, they said, the authorities of Armenia are obliged to act solely from the standpoint of promoting and protecting the right of the Artsakh people to self-determination in international instances, based on the decision of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Armenia of July 8, 1992, according to which "any domestic or international document is unacceptable for Armenia, in which NKR is noted as part of Azerbaijan".

"For the authorities acting both in Artsakh and Armenia, declarations on the proclamation of two Armenian republics, values enshrined in the decision of September 2, 1991 and the independence referendum of December 10, 1991 should be a priority," the Karabakh MPs said.
