Pashinyan says Armenia expects clear political assessment from CSTO

PanARMENIAN.Net - Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Friday, September 30 addressed the expectations from the CSTO, the public discontent from the CSTO, and the possibility of Armenia's withdrawal from the organization.

The Prime Minister said in an interview with the Public Television that Armenia expects a clear political assessment of the situation from the CSTO.

He noted that in recent contacts with the representatives of the CSTO, he has noted the "very rapid growth and change of certain public sentiments" towards the structure in Armenia.

"During one conversation, it was even said that there is a fear in the CSTO that the CSTO will lose Armenia, to which I responded that there is an opposite fear in Armenia that Armenia will lose the CSTO," Pashinyan said.

"In another wording, they say that Armenia will leave the CSTO, I put it the other way around: there is a fear that the CSTO will leave Armenia."

During Baku's earlier aggressions, which resulted in Armenia losing more land, the CSTO had told Armenia that the reason they are not interfering is because the border between the two countries is not demarcated.

"This begs the question: where does the red line pass? Back then, we raised the need for a clear answer to this question. And this is important not only for Armenia, but also for the CSTO, because to say that there is no border between Armenia and Azerbaijan means to say that there is no CSTO, because the CSTO has a zone of responsibility that is marked by borders," the PM said.

The latest round of fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan began in the wee hours of September 13, when the Azerbaijani military attacked Armenian posts and shelled Armenian settlements both on the border and deep behind the frontline. More than 200 people are dead or missing as a result, the Security Council of Armenia said on Monday.
