Armenia PM wants Soviet maps from 1975 in demarcation work

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan believes the map of the General Staff of the Soviet Union of 1975 can and should be the basis for demarcation work between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Pashinyan made the remarks at a press conference on Monday, May 22, when asked about the demarcation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

He noted that Armenia confirms the position of Russia, according to which the demarcation process should be carried out on the basis of the maps of the General Staff of the Soviet Union of 1975. According to him, the further withdrawal of troops from the border line would ensure the stability of the border.

“I cannot record the shift in Azerbaijan's position in this regard, at the same time I would like to emphasize that ensuring border security is an important part of the negotiation process.

“It is no secret that Azerbaijan continues the policy of military pressure, trying to obtain more favorable conditions in the negotiations through military pressure. But at the same time, I must state that this is a violation of an internationally recognized obligation, because following the results of the Sochi meeting on October 31, 2022, the parties agreed and pledged to avoid the use of force or the threat of force. We must continue our work.”

According to him, the withdrawal of troops does not predetermine work on the demarcation of the border, it is about ensuring the stability of the border situation.
