Baku says Armenians “probably misunderstand” corridor demand![]() October 5, 2023 - 13:10 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Special representative of the President of Azerbaijan Elchin Amirbekov has commented on Azerbaijan’s demands for a corridor through Armenia, claiming that Armenians have “probably misunderstood” Baku. “Because the Azerbaijani side does not claim these territories and recognizes them,” Amirbekov said in a conversation with Michael Doran, the director of the Center for Peace and Security in the Middle East of the Hudson Institute. Amirbekov added that Armenia must provide Azerbaijan with reliable guarantees to ensure unhindered traffic movement along the road – between Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan. How Yerevan will do that, he said, is another question, RFE/RL’s Armenian service says. Azerbaijan and Turkey have on multiple occasions raised the question about the Zangezur "corridor" through the southern Armenian province of Syunik that would connect Nakhijevan to the rest of Azerbaijan. The Armenian side, however, has repeatedly denied being involved in negotiations for the provision of a corridor to Azerbaijan, stressing that they have only agreed to unblock transport communications in the region. ![]() ![]() The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Ararat Mirzoyan and Jeyhun Bayramov, have arrived in Washington.
