MP: fair distribution of public resources can eliminate gender inequality

PanARMENIAN.Net - Speaking at the annual session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in Strasbourg, Armenian MP Sona Ghazaryan stated that the fair distribution of public resources is essential to addressing the root causes of gender inequality.

She emphasized that systemic barriers continue to hinder the full participation of women in various sectors.

"For decades, women have made tremendous progress in the economy. Today, they lead corporations, shape innovative industries, and establish businesses that drive change. However, we must not overlook the challenges that persist. Systemic barriers still limit women’s full participation. Many continue to face discrimination in hiring processes, remain underrepresented in decision-making roles, and lack equal opportunities in emerging fields such as STEM.

While it is evident that women’s empowerment stimulates economic growth, many countries still struggle with wage gaps and limited access to financial resources for female entrepreneurs. The ‘glass ceiling’ may have cracks, but it is far from being shattered. The report under discussion today proposes a solution—gender-sensitive budgeting. This is not just a theoretical concept; it is a tool for real change.

Through the fair distribution of public resources, we can eliminate the root causes of gender inequality. Consider how women can advance in their professional lives if state budgets fail to account for accessible childcare, maternity leave, and targeted skills development programs. Gender-sensitive budgeting underscores that financial decisions are, in reality, moral choices that should contribute to the well-being of individuals and the progress of society as a whole.

Entrepreneurship is also central to this discussion. Women entrepreneurs not only create jobs but also redefine industries and drive innovation. Yet, as of today, only 2% of venture capital funding goes to women-led startups. This is not just inequality—it is a missed opportunity that hampers overall progress.

The report highlights an important truth: achieving gender equality in the economy is not only a moral imperative but also an economic necessity. Let us promote policies that reflect the realities women face. And let us ensure that every girl born today grows up in a world where her potential is valued not by her gender but by her dreams," Ghazaryan stated.
