Grok 3 debuts as Musk asserts AI model outperforms rivals

PanARMENIAN.Net - Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has introduced Grok 3, its latest artificial intelligence model, positioning it as a strong competitor in the field. During a live-streamed event on Musk’s X platform, company representatives stated that Grok 3 excels in mathematics, science, and coding, surpassing Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s GPT-4o, Anthropic’s Claude 3.5, and DeepSeek’s V3. However, its performance relative to OpenAI’s o3-mini and DeepSeek R1 remains uncertain.

The new model incorporates several enhanced features, including an advanced web search function called “deep search,” a capability to generate online game code, and a “big brain” mode designed for handling complex reasoning tasks. Users subscribed to X’s $40 per month “Premium+” plan or those with direct subscriptions via the Grok standalone app or website can access Grok 3 immediately, CNN reports.

The launch of Grok 3 comes as the AI race continues to accelerate, with leading technology firms investing heavily in powerful data centers to drive AI advancements. Industry leaders anticipate that AI will significantly transform work processes, online interactions, and even how people navigate the internet, potentially reshaping traditional search engines and coding methodologies.

Meanwhile, U.S. tech giants face emerging competition from China-based DeepSeek, whose R1 model has raised questions about Silicon Valley’s approach to AI infrastructure, suggesting that cutting-edge AI can be developed more efficiently. According to Musk, Grok 3 was trained using ten times the computing power of its predecessor, Grok 2, thanks to a new data center xAI established in Tennessee last year.

Musk described Grok 3 as a “beta” release, cautioning that it may have initial flaws. “Expect some imperfections at first, but we’ll improve it rapidly,” he remarked. He also hinted at an upcoming “voice mode” feature, similar to the conversational functionality found in ChatGPT and other AI assistants, which he said would be available soon.

In addition to his AI ventures, Musk has been expanding his influence in both technology and politics. Recently appointed as a “special government employee” under former President Donald Trump’s administration, he has also made strategic moves in the AI industry. Last week, he led a consortium of investors offering $97 billion to acquire OpenAI, escalating his long-standing rivalry with OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman. The company’s board rejected the offer. Musk has criticized OpenAI for moving away from its original nonprofit mission and has urged the company to make more of its technology open-source.

When questioned on Monday about whether xAI would open-source its own models, Musk stated that the company would publicly release the code for its previous Grok 2 model once Grok 3 reaches a “mature and stable” stage in the coming months.
