Government initiates national security strategy revision![]() February 20, 2025 - 15:13 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - National Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan stated that the revision of Armenia's national security strategy has become necessary due to significant changes in the country’s security environment in recent years. Speaking to reporters after a government meeting, Grigoryan noted that the current strategy was developed and published in the summer of 2020. However, since then, fundamental changes have occurred, prompting the need for an update, Sputnik Armenia reports. He explained that authorities have taken time to assess these changes before proceeding with a well-founded approach to the strategy’s revision. “We cannot yet specify the exact directions of change. So far, discussions have focused on procedural matters,” Grigoryan said. He added that the revision process has effectively begun and assured that it will be conducted transparently and openly. On January 28, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the National Security Strategy should be revised. On February 19, it was announced that the prime minister had decided to establish an interdepartmental commission to oversee the process. Armenia’s current national security strategy, adopted in 2020, emphasizes the country's identity and resilience. It highlights that Armenians are proud citizens of the Republic of Armenia, descendants of those who founded the Third Republic and liberated Artsakh. The document also underscores the nation’s ability to overcome historical challenges and maintain its statehood through skills, knowledge, and resilience. One of the key national objectives outlined in the strategy includes the international recognition of Artsakh’s right to self-determination without restrictions, as well as the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and efforts to address its consequences. The section on Armenia’s security environment describes Turkey’s hostile policy towards Armenia, including maintaining a blockade, refusing to establish diplomatic relations without preconditions, and denying historical events. ![]() ![]() Grigoryan added that the situation around the world and particularly in the region is very difficult. The Armenian Defense Ministry has denied Azerbaijan's accusations of violating the ceasefire.
