Armenia, Azerbaijan to withdraw legal claims under peace agreement

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia and Azerbaijan will commit to refraining from filing new lawsuits regarding disputes that existed before the ratification of the peace agreement. This obligation will take effect once the agreement enters into force and both sides withdraw their pending cases from international courts. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated this during a conversation with journalists in the National Assembly.

Commenting on remarks by Hikmet Hajiyev, an advisor to the Azerbaijani president, who suggested that Armenia should pay compensation, Mirzoyan said such statements undermine the negotiation process.

"This is precisely the kind of unconstructive rhetoric that torpedoes the peace process and the establishment of relations," he said.

The minister further noted that there are numerous cases where Azerbaijan has violated human rights and caused material damage.

"When the agreement takes effect and both sides withdraw their claims, they will also commit to not filing future lawsuits on disputes that existed before the treaty’s signing. All ongoing disputes should be resolved through reconciliation," Mirzoyan added.

On March 13, Armenia and Azerbaijan announced that they had reached a final agreement on the text of a peace treaty. Armenia's Foreign Ministry confirmed its readiness to discuss the timeline and location for signing the agreement with Baku.

Several countries have already welcomed the progress in finalizing the peace treaty, expressing hope that it will be signed as soon as possible.
