Yerevan city council reviews proposal to halt transport fare hike

PanARMENIAN.Net - A transport fare hike suspension proposal by the Mother Armenia faction has received a positive assessment from the council's finance and economic affairs committee.

On Facebook, Yerevan Council member Gevorg Stepanyan from the Mother Armenia faction announced that their proposed motion aimed at halting the transport fare increase had passed committee review.

“A short while ago, the finance and economic affairs committee at Yerevan City Hall convened. The project submitted by Mother Armenia—intended to suspend the transport fare increase—received a positive conclusion,” he wrote.

The proposal passed with 8 votes in favor and 6 against.

It is now scheduled for a vote during the April 22 council session. If approved, the suspension of the fare hike will be enacted.

“Let’s wait and see who votes against and chooses to oppose the people. No to the fare increase,” Stepanyan’s post concluded.

Since February 1, former Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan, the Mother Armenia faction, and youth activist groups have opposed the fare increase, encouraging residents to continue paying only 100 drams per ride. Despite this, the Yerevan Council passed a motion with 33 votes to set the new fare at 150 drams per ride starting February 1. Additionally, the city plans to introduce unified ticketing package systems.
